GS1-128 labels were formerly known as UCC-128 labels.
Some of your customers may still call their labels UCC-128 labels. CovalentWorks supports all versions of UCC-128 and GS1-128 labels for any EDI customer you may have in the United States, Canada or Mexico GS1-128 label numbers are also known as serial shipping container label numbers (sometimes abbreviated as SSCC-128) and consist of four numbers: Your
Advance Shipment Notice Number (
ASN EDI number), your vendor number
for the customer receiving your shipment, your carton number to which the label will be pasted, and a check digit.
The check digit is a number that is calculated based on the other three numbers. The check digit is used by the bar code scanner that reads the bar code label. The bar code scanner uses the check digit to make sure it read the other three numbers correctly.
It does this by calculating its own check digit from the three numbers that it read and then comparing the check digit it calculated with the check digit on the bar code label. If the two check digits are the same, then the bar code label was read correctly.
Your customers will able to know what is in your cartons without opening them by using their ASN software. The GS1-128 label
as mentioned above,
contains your ASN number. The ASN EDI transaction is like an electronic packing slip - which products, the number of items and how they are packed are all included. Before your products arrive at your customer's site, you will have already sent an ASN for the shipment.
Your customer will scan your bar code label and use their ASN software receiving system to pull up the ASN you previously sent to them. Now they will know how to route your cartons through the rest of their logistics system. All without opening your cartons and with much greater efficiency.
