Caterpillar EDI Compliance

Caterpillar Inc. was established in 1925 and is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel electric locomotives. The company is ranked 54th in the Fortune 500.

EDI documents are communicated through a transmission method called VAN (Value Added Network). The following EDI document types and labels are mandatory for Caterpillar suppliers and have been fully tested by CovalentWorks for exact compliance with Caterpillar’s EDI specifications.

Caterpillar EDI Requirements

SP20 (Standard Practice 20) compliant bar code shipping labels

Caterpillar’s suppliers use several label types when a purchase order is fulfilled. They include:

Portrait Master Label for multiple single packs of same part Carton. Portrait. 4"x6". NEW label w/ no 2D barcode.

Portrait Mixed Load for multiple single packs of different parts. Portrait. 4"x6". NEW label w/ no 2D barcode.

Portrait Single Pack for single pack Carton. 4" x 6" Portrait. NEW label w/ no 2D barcode.

The ASN (Advance Shipping notice) will have information about the items that are being shipped, how the items are packed, and how they are being transported. For example, the date, gross weight in pounds, SCAC code, carrier reference number, number of units shipped, number of loads, and bar coded serial number will be included as well as information directly from the purchase order.

Caterpillar uses the SOIP and SIP format for ASN’s. SOIP (Shipment, Order, Item and Pack) is commonly called “Standard Pack” because it allows for only one product type to be packed into any one carton.

SIP stands for Shipment, Item, and Pack. SIP is a less common kind of ASN.

Caterpillar requires ASN’s from suppliers regardless of whether the supplier receives 830 Planning Schedules, 850 Purchase orders, or 862 Shipping Schedules. These documents may indicate multiple loads with different quantities as well as single loads.
