The ASN (Advance Shipping notice) will have information about the items that are being shipped, how the items are packed, and how they are being transported. For example, the date, gross weight in pounds, SCAC code, carrier reference number, number of units shipped, number of loads, and bar coded serial number will be included as well as information directly from the purchase order.
Caterpillar uses the SOIP and SIP format for ASN’s. SOIP (Shipment, Order, Item and Pack) is commonly called “Standard Pack” because it allows for only one product type to be packed into any one carton.
SIP stands for Shipment, Item, and Pack. SIP is a less common kind of ASN.
Caterpillar requires ASN’s from suppliers regardless of whether the supplier receives 830 Planning Schedules, 850 Purchase orders, or 862 Shipping Schedules. These documents may indicate multiple loads with different quantities as well as single loads.
