Developed by the United Nations, EDIFACT is the international standard for electronic data interchange (EDI). The three major components of EDIFACT are a standard syntax for structuring data, i-EDI (interactive EDI), and standard messages to accommodate interaction among various industries and countries. EDIFACT stands for Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport.
ANSI X.12 is by far the most widely used standard in the United States. UN/EDIFACT is more popular outside the United States, although it is frequently used in the US automotive supply chain.
