Staples EDI Requirements

The ASN (Advance Shipping Notice) contains detailed information about the products that are being sent to Staples and as well as transportation information. For example, the numeric weight, SCAC code, Bill of Lading or tracking number, date, name and pack will be included in addition to data that comes from the purchase order.

Staples uses the SOPI, SOTPI and SOTI format for ASN’s.

SOPI is mainly used for shipments with more than one item type and SOIP is used for shipments that have only one item type.

An SOPI (Shipment, Order, Pack (carton) and Item) ASN is also known as “Pick and Pack” because more than one type of item can be picked from the supplier’s shelves and packed into the same carton.

The SOTPI packing structure is like the SOPI packing structure, except that the cartons are in turn loaded onto one or more pallets/slips which is the T for “Tare” packing level.

Lastly, the SOTI packing structure is like the SOPI packing structure, except that the carton information is replaced by T (Tare) pallet information.

Staples requires several kinds of labels when suppliers ship orders. Some of these labels types are:

  • Carton Label for SOIP/SOPI ASN
  • Carton Label for SOIP/SOPI ASN
  • Pallet Label for SOIT/SOTI ASN
  • Carton Only
  • Carton Only No Tracking
  • Pallet Only
  • Pallet Only No Tracking
